Children's Mental Health Week 2023 took place from the 6th to the 12th of February. This year's theme was 'Let's Connect.' The children in the Capybara Class enjoyed a range of activities during the week, encouraging them to learn more about each other and to really 'connect'. The children also thought about how bodily health is different to 'mental health', what the term really means, and how they can look after their own mental health. The week also inspired us to create a 'calm area' in the classroom - a darker area lit softly by fairy lights, adorned with cushions and beanbags, where the children can escape the woes of a busy life (and classroom!) when they need and wish.
To culminate the week, the children linked their learning in Art to Mental Health, and enjoyed a project upon troubled and fascinating artist Vincent Van Gogh. Linking again to their 'First Man on the Moon' topic, they each took a piece of 'mindfulness colouring', which when put back together creates Gogh's famous piece entitled 'The Starry Night.' Painted in June 1889, 'The Starry Night' depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an imaginary village.
Please pop into school to see our finished masterpiece!
